Outrigger for folding kayaks with single-mast rig
This outrigger is suitable for many folding kayaks; a list of compatible boats can be found below. It can be mounted on your folding kayak in just a few simple steps. Despite its low weight, it is very robust and provides the necessary safety when sailing.
For folding kayaks, the inflatable Burbot (Quappe) floats are especially practical, as they offer a very small packed size. More elegant and faster are the Barracuda (Barrakuda) floats made of GRP and the Pike (Hecht) floats made of wood.
The outrigger is sectional, and the complete set fits easily into a car trunk. It is mounted amidships, just behind the front backrest, using our washboard hooks. The outrigger also allows the main mast to be securely braced outward; attachment rings for this purpose are already pre-installed.
This bracing has a major advantage: it significantly increases the stability of the sailing folding kayak. We have experienced ourselves how the sail forces transmitted through the mast can twist the hull (torsion) to such an extent that wrinkles form in the deck, raising the question of how long this can safely continue.
Difference between single-mast and twin-mast outriggers
With the single-mast outrigger, the daggerboards are mounted on the daggerboard bridge in front of the forward seating position.
With the twin-mast outrigger, daggerboard holders are integrated directly into the outrigger, making the daggerboard bridge unnecessary.
If you plan to upgrade your single-mast rig later with a mizzen to a two-mast setup (ketch rig on a folding kayak), choose the twin-mast outrigger. It can be used for both single-mast and twin-mast configurations.
